Welcome to the encrypted::Mail network!

Please take a moment to review this information in order to enhance your user experience.

Once the program is installed, EXPORT your key file and DON'T FORGET YOUR APPLICATION PASSWORD!  We can't express this enough.  This program is not built with “breaks” or “hacks” so if you lose your key file (computer damage, etc) not only will you be unable to use this program with your corresponding email address, your recipients will be unable to open messages you previously sent them.  Data Fortress, Inc. maintains the public key, however, your personal computer stores the private key that is not accessible to anyone, but you.  Without both the public and private keys, messages are not accessible.  encrypted::Mail is secure and is not intended to be compromised.

encrypted::Mail is not a full mail client.  It is intended to work with your existing mail client.  Therefore, the program does not have a place to save sent messages.  By default every message you send is sent back to you and can be viewed in your current mail client.  If it's not there, check your junk mail folder.  We recommend setting a rule that sent messages be placed in your sent folder for later review.  If you do not wish to receive a copy of your sent messages, simply uncheck the box “Automatically Send a Blind Carbon Copy back to yourself.”  This is located in the Tools|Options at the bottom of the screen.

When sending a message, use the “Instruction” field to provide a password hint that only your recipient will know.  Do not send confidential information in this field.

After the first message sent to a recipient a pass phrase is no longer required as the system uses the public key registry to confirm the authenticity of the message.  However, upon opening the message, the application requests a passphrase even if you didn't supply one.  Simply press cancel and your message will be displayed if a passphrase was not included.  At this point, this is a security feature.  Someone that accesses your mail would not expect that a password was not included if prompted.  We'd like user feedback on this prior to our next upgrade, so after a couple times of use, give us your feedback.

If you are sending a message to several recipients, expect the program to take a little longer.  Each recipient message is encrypted separately.  If one party is not an encrypted::Mail user, you will need to place a passphrase on that particular message.

You can access the program from the icon on your desktop or from the system task tray.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR FREE WEB MAIL USERS WITHOUT SMTP ACCESS:  When you create an encrypted::Mail message, the message will be placed on your desktop so that you can attach it using your webmail account.  You need to attach your encrypted::Mail message immediately after you press send as your attachment is automatically deleted from your desktop after you close the program.  This is a security feature!

Thank you for taking the time to review this information.  We hope you enjoy using encrypted::Mail and hope you will share it with others.  Our users are a vital resource for our development team, so give us your feedback, good and bad.  It's how we improve our products!
